The canyon is a natural drainage basin formed by the west slope of the Palatine Hills, the hills northwest of Mt Sylvania, and by Tryon Creek that runs through it. The Parklands continues to closely follow developments and guidance regarding the ongoing pandemic. The project will included a traditional play area, improvements to the access from SW 12th street, upgrades to the picnic tables, and the addition of benches. Marshall Park occupies part of Second Ward, also called Brooklyn, Charlotte's largest African American neighborhood during the first two-thirds of the twentieth century. The playground replaced the equipment that was removed for safety reasons. This 14-acre community park serves the downtown and central Vancouver area. Within the park is a waterfall framed by rock boulders. The playground and restrooms are open year round, with the water at the Sprayground turned on mid-May through September. We are working on a community based initiative to restore the playground and a natural play area to Marshall Park.
Marshall Park was chosen because of its central location with easy accessibility to essential amenities like parking and public transit, a natural setting with a mature tree canopy, and connection to Marshall Community Center and Luepke Senior Center which already offer robust programming for residents of all abilities.The original firefighter theme of the original playground is an important driver for the design to continue to honor the memory of Chelsea Anderson and her family. I did what I assume was the entire park trail system and it figures to be about 4 miles in total, with several (Tryon) creek crossings and about a hundred feet of elevation gain and loss. Bulldozers cleared almost 1,500 structures, including 200 businesses and a dozen churches. The Marshall Playground was made possible, in part, by a grant from Louisville Metro and a donation from the Marshall Family Foundation. City officials used federal "urban renewal" funds to demolish Brooklyn during the 1960s. Due to an uptick in cases, group gatherings must now be limited to 10 or less.
