28 JUNE 2017 | KALMIOPSIS WILDERNESS, ORE. — I recently had the chance to spend a few days backpacking along the Kalmiopsis Rim Trail 1124 with the 2017 Siskiyou Mountain Club trail crew. A number of mining towns were built and more than a dozen hard rock mines were started.
One of those, the Carter Fire, was contained at about 20 acres. The Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area and adjacent peaks are in southwest Oregon and is roughly bordered by California to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Rogue River to the north and Highway 199 to the east. A portion of the current Kalmiopsis was originally protected by the U.S. Forest Service in the 1940s and subsequently was included in areas protected by the Wilderness Act of 1964. The area is characterized by deep, rough canyons, sharp rock ridges, and clear, rushing mountain streams and rivers.
