The initial mindset I was met with was that students would be wasting valuable time cutting and pasting rather than learning. I just use the card stock that is provided by the school!Thank you for the information! That can certainly be one aspect of it. I didn’t learn the creative process until I was an adult and feel I may have been somewhat cheated in school. What I am doing different this year is that I am going to have the students block off one page per week.
Science Interactive Notebook - Guide to getting started! I recommend using this interactive notebook resource with your students in the first few weeks of school to teach them how we learn.
Some teachers who use INB’s choose to use the left side/right side method, but I found that to be a bit limiting and was often a waste of space.
To solve this issue, I made a new rule.
This is all done during our study hall.Phew!
It’s nice to have some uniformity in the notebooks, and these babies can get THICK. I tell the students that everyone has to be done by the time the song is over. Their note-taking also might include drawing pictures, coloring, taking notes from a YouTube video or a podcast, obtaining information through stations around the room, etc. Use alone, in an interactive science journal, or in an observation journal. I also go out and buy about 30-40 notebooks when they are dirt cheap in late August so that if students don’t have one on the day of set up, I will provide them with one. When I announced this on Instagram I had so many questions about this. I will let you know! This was the first year that I made dividers for each unit. Interactive notebooks can definitely present their challenges when you're just starting out. It includes several "checks for understanding" to ensure students grasp the idea of counting atoms.
There are 2 items included in this states of matter download.
I even started it in the middle of the year. Students do a better job keeping up with returned graded work because every page is numbered so they can put graded assignments right back into the packet where it came from. Well I’m sure you can see the issue that I had…By the end of the year some students had 25 pages left because they write small, and some had 0. Each template comes with a student copy, answer key, teacher key (great for absent students) and high-quality images showing how to use it. Do you teach your kids how to take notes in the beginning of the year?Would these fit in spiral notebooks instead of the composition?
If my classes are any indication there will be a point early on in the year where the students bond with their notebooks and truly take ownership of them. Science Interactive Notebooks are a great tool for students to process and understand science concepts in an enga During the first week of school we spend one entire class period (47 minutes) setting up our notebooks.
Many teachers use interactive notebooks for all subjects, while some use it for only one or two subjects. I finally feel confident enough to share what works best for my students in our classroom! I had to come up with a way to cut this down because it was cutting into my instructional time. We put all important items in here from notes, activities, reference sheets, worksheets, labs, etc . We have so many types of learners in our classrooms.
When it comes time for gathering the materials, have one student from each group go and get the notebooks and materials. This will be especially helpful at the beginning of the year as students are getting the hang of it. If we are being honest, the students that take their notebooks home to study before a test are usually the students that are going to bring them back the next day. There are always those students that write the least amount possible. The more they put into their notebook, the better they will do in science.
The amount of time it took for the students to find the next page was ridiculous. You need to have a process in place for each of the following questions. There are many ways to set up the interactive notebook, but I prefer to have students buy composition notebooks rather than a spiral or other type of notebook. Again, nothing is perfect, but this is what worked for me! Many students would have it almost completely finished by the time the tardy bell rang.
To be honest, I truly don’t know if you would classify my notebooks as “interactive” notebooks! When you throw in an interactive element into the graphic organizer the retention is that much more effective.Interactive notebooking is not simply a student copying notes from the board into a cute template.
