Rakhee is superb in the lead as a woman who becomes mentally ill after seeing her beloved sister as a widow and how she returns to her home after 14 years after making a recovery.
After she is taken to a mental hospital, Poornima takes it upon her shoulders to look after her sister's family and her little son, and she ultimately marries her sister's husband. There is no such thing as bad, malicious or villainous in Gulzar's films, there are people who become victims of their own acts. Up to 1500 people can be comfortable accommodated here. This husband was a good match of her, he placated himself by supporting his ex-wife in mental hospital and imagining that this way he did his duty towards her. Since both have come of age, he first arranges Sharda's marriage with a businessman named Balraj Kohli.
There are no villains and no heroes. Thats one reason why I havent revisited Vijeta either, and it is a beautiful movie.
A dysfunctional middle-class family is transformed by the attentions of their talented new chef -- until he vanishes along with their valuable jewels. Saw this movie years ago and thought that Shashi and moustaches didnt go together at all. Shashi isn't in it but Vinod Khanna is! Unfortunately, I can't say that Rekha-Rakhee have enough scenes together to outweigh the painful drama of the film overall; also because their interactions are mostly negative, in the sense that we're constantly worried about Rekha dropping the ball or something.
In my opinion, there are darker undertones in the film, all is not so innocent.

It is an outstanding movie in which there is no villain. I usually avoid mental illness stuff because it's so wrenching but I really like girl-bonding. This is why she behaved in such a manner that she did attract her sister's husband long before her sister went mad.
