Fils d'un modeste cordonnier de Gand en Belgique, Leo Baekeland y naquit en 1863.



En 1889, son voyage de noces l'ayant amené aux États-Unis, il décide de s'installer dans ce pays dont il obtient la nationalité en 1897.





Après avoir effectué ses études supérieures à l'université de Gand, il y obtient en 1884 un doctorat en sciences naturelles et y commence une carrière d'enseignant.
